How it works in the classroom
A training process structured in three phases to maximise learning and participant safety.

Initial mapping briefing
The trainer introduces the session’s goals, explains how to use the VR headset and outlines the scenarios participants will face. The fire safety procedures to apply are clarified.
Typical duration: 10-15 minutes

Immersive VR experience
Each participant puts on the Meta Quest headset and enters the virtual environment. Here they face realistic fire-emergency situations, putting low-risk management procedures into practice.
Usage mode: 1 participant per headset. With 20 headsets, 20 participants train in parallel while the others wait their turn or follow on an external monitor.

Debriefing and assessment
At the end of the VR experience, the trainer leads a discussion on the results, analyses performance, highlights strengths and areas for improvement, consolidating the learning.
Output: personalised feedback and a certificate of completion (optional)

Virtual Reality (VR) in fire safety training
Italy’s new State-Regions Agreement (17/04/2025) values active and experiential methods (simulations, scenarios, drills) to increase the effectiveness of training and make the verification of learning more consistent with its goals.
In line with this approach, technical and methodological contributions from INAIL highlight the potential of immersive technologies (VR/AR/MR) in improving engagement, awareness and decision-making in safety.
Choose the option best suited to your company
A. VR supporting fire-warden courses (Italian DM 02/09/2021)
VR helps train procedures and typical mistakes in realistic scenarios. It complements the training, without replacing the required practical parts.
B. VR as a complementary experiential module (SR Agreement 2025, art. 37)
It makes learning about emergencies, evacuation and safe behaviours more effective, with a measurable and verifiable approach, and traceability when required.
Logistics: what is needed for the Virtual Reality simulation?
- 📐 Space required: minimum 2x2 metres of free area per trainee
- 🧼 Headset hygiene: single-use face covers or sanitising between turns (best practice included)
- ⏱️ Session duration: varies with the chosen training path (typically 30-60 minutes total per participant, briefing + VR + debriefing included)
- 👥 Group management: participant rotation or multiple headsets for parallel sessions

🏢 Office Scenario 360°
A complete virtual office with furnishings, equipment and escape routes. The trainee faces the start of a fire and must apply the correct emergency procedures.

🔥 Extinguisher Handling VR
A realistic simulation of using portable extinguishers on different types of fire. Hands-on learning of extinguishing techniques in total safety.

🚪 Guided Evacuation
Evacuation routes in environments with smoke, emergency signage and obstacles. The trainee learns to stay calm and follow safe escape procedures.
